Working at China 28 and Being White

During my high school years, I worked a job as a takeout for a Chinese restaurant in order to make some extra cash. While the job might seem light a straight forward process of simply transporting food and collecting money, it isn’t. The money is all right, but they never warned you about the customers.
My most sane customer
After my first two hours as a delivery driver, I began to form a pattern to my work. I grew comfortable with my relationship with the customer as someone polite, foodbearing, and anonymous. Intimate enough that they recognize my face and I know they’re gastronomic preference but there the line is drawn.
Unfortunately hour three ruined my line.
I received my first of many strange requests on the phone.
“Come ‘round to the side of the house and knock three times.” The voice was scratchy. This man knew the Coolidge years. The request seemed reasonable.
At the side door I knock. A lack of response asks for a second rap on the door.
“I’m coming” the interior of the house says.
The door opens and I’m presented with an old man and an overwhelming smell of peanuts and marijuana. All my olfactory senses were gently caressed by the smell of circus run by Cheech Marin.
wouldn't it be wonderful?
“Come on in.” I pause, I know that this is outside my standard protocol born two hours ago but before I can say no he's grabbed my arm and pulled me in. He talks to me for a bit, while I lean uncomfortably against his dryer. The dryer smells oddly like neither weed or nuts but of mustard. He talks a bit longer hands me the money with a whooping cough every third word and then let's me go. Most importantly, with a nice tip.
After another month I quickly realized how common this sort of thing would be.
When you work with someone you can't communicate with you begin to be able read their face, you learn their hands.
This usually means 'hunger'
To know when they’re listening and when they’re paying lip service. My boss Annie had minimal skills with English so when her daughter wasn’t around she would just nod and wait until she heard a food name. A caller could say anything but until they got to General Tsao’s chicken or Shrimp Lo Mein Annie just wasn’t listening. But they never said that your customers would make absolutely absurd requests.
It was never until I arrived at these houses that I would come to know whatever Annie had unknowingly agreed to.
My co-worker had once been asked to return to house with the expressed purpose of bringing no less than 60 packets of duck sauce. Another required an entire gallon of wanton soup, when the delivery was made I noticed a lack of other persons. There will always be my favorite question - "What goes best with 2001 Space Odyssey?"
Chicken Lo Mein, the answer is Chicken Lo Mein
I was forever bothered by bizarre questions concerning the food contents.
“There’s no pork in that, right?” someone would ask.
“You ordered Shrimp fried rice.”
“Yeah, but there’s no pork in it right?”
“Right.” I'd say.
"What about cat?"
"Excuse me?"
"Cat, is there cat meat in it?"
"No."
One woman was always in a bend over the sauces.
“Excuse me; is this soy sauce low sodium?”
Like every takeout place in America, we don’t make the sauce. Of course I couldn’t say this.
“Yes.” I lied.
After being asked if the wonton soup could be served without wantons or if the fortune cookies could come chocolate covered I learned that the customer is always right, most especially when they’re not.
What seemed a simple transportation stint, quickly began a learning experience about how bizarre people are in their own homes. Everyone seems to let their guard down for the delivery guy, but no one tells you what that really means. I was on their territory so they were always king in a bathrobe with classic rock on the stereo.

J.K. Rowling gets a Dinosaur: How we've changed Nomenclature

If you've ever read one of those 'Field Guides to American Wild Life' or heard the name homo sapiens you've got some vague familiarity with scientific nomenclature. The lofty system of classifying living things and giving them uncomfortably long Greco-Roman names, well except when we got to Africa and somehow got lazy with names like gazella gazella and gorilla gorilla gorilla.
Clue-neither are cheetahs.
Latin for this 'cutefusing'
But it seems that either scientists have run out of greek and latin words or they are just giving into their true geek desires. Case in point a dinosaur discovered recently named Dracorex hogwartsia, or if you don't speak latin 'the dragon-king of Hogwarts.' To clarify while Sirius Black was named after a nearby star named from Greek and Remus Lupin's name is taken from the myth of a man raised by wolves Romulus and Remus and lupus is latin for wolf, Hogwarts is nothing classical. Just warts on a hog.
Moral of the story, those fancy names are gonna be replaced by science fiction and fantasy references. Coincidentally, Dracorex was on Primeval, the British science fiction programme about prehistoric monsters and time portals. Clearly all involved know their audience.
Next exhibit, planet Xena named after the sexual ambiguous warrior princess who gave nerds another reason to fantasize over mythology while thinking about girls in leather. While the celestial body 'official' name is actually Eris, the research team that discovered it referred to it as Xena for so long that the name stuck in the astronomical community.
Hell, Arthur C. Clark predicted that we would run out of names from the Greek Pantheon in Rendez-vous with Rama, hence the name Rama (The seventh avatar of Vishnu, for those not into Hindu mythology). He just didn't expect it so soon.
as if we needed another
Of course when the new scientists aren't naming things after magic places, or Greek warwomen, they simple name something after themselves. Like John Cleese. Yes, John Marwood (sweet middle name) Cleese of Monty Python. Fun fact, John Cleese loves lemurs so much that he makes regular expeditions to Madagascar to visit them and makes of 98% of the funding for various organization to protect them. Which bring us to avahi cleesei or the Bemaraha wooly lemur or better yet the John Cleese lemur.
Cleese and a lemur, my point exactly
So say good by to confusing Greco-Roman names like Monodon monoceros and prepare for for fish and dinosaurs named after Battlestar Galactica and the beasts of Mordor.

Dub Step, Dub Step, Club Step

I recently crawled from the wonderful rock I live under and while I've managed to keep up with the basic necessities of eating and breathing,  music, movies and television has fallen far out of my sphere. Today I saw the commercial for the upcoming flick Red Tails. I'm not here to question what looks like a baffling premise for a movie, or why Anthony Hemingway is still doing there, I'm here to comment on the commercial's music selection: Dubstep.  So it seems the technomechanical music child of 2011 is being changed for a wider audience.
I go and dance at raves, or the street, or my room but I'm not really one for clubs so while I'm familiar with dubstep, it seems puzzling in any context where I'm not going for a jog or covered with glowlights.
no fucks to give when I'm a banana
So I asked my roommate who does go to clubs "Do they play dubstep at clubs yet?"
His response "Kind of...yeah, sometimes."
While I appreciate a good noncommittal answer, 'kind of' was enough to let me play the auger for a moment. Dubstep, the once baffling new techno music genre originally designed for mood music while the Terminator and RoboCop make wild passionate humping, it seems is be under retooling for the public palate.
DUBSTEP is what they were listening to
The logical club version would be called Clubstep.
What happens to our dubstep "classics"? A toned-down version of Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites? I can see it. Random soundbytes playing in a mall while you shop blended in with muzak, plausible.
But a better question that keeps me up at night: what will happen to dubstep remixes of previous songs?
Skrillex's remix of Benny Bennasi's Cinema turns to what? Can I take out the parts that are too intense and will that just leave Benny Benassi with ghostly remnants of Skrillex?
Ellie Goulding what will become of you?
But we've done it with movies so many times so the bag of fucks seems to remain full and undoled.

Pirates in Space

I once watched the second Pirates of the Carribean movie and wondered dully with rum soaked pupils why the Sarlacc pit had arrived one movie too soon and was eating Johnny Depp. Upon my recent re-watching I understand now that an antihero and real hero and action girl were fighting an only slightly different evil empire. I'm not trying to say that the writers stole it but perhaps every single day during lunch Episodes IV-VI were playing in the break room.
This, is totally different
...than this
We have two fantastic anti- heroes Johnny Depp and Han Solo with equally amazing ships The Black Pearl and The Millennium Falcon who both have favorite hairy best pal Gibbsbacca the lovable fur beast. Our herohero is a young man of humble origins going on epic quest to fight the major evil and eventually find out the truth of his heritage that his father has begun something awful. Elizabeth Swann is the new Lea, both women born into power who over the course of the overarching plot at some point fall for both heroes.
It's with the specifics that the analogy starts to loose its steam but let's rail on regardless.
other adventures while rumdrunk
C3P0 and R2D2 have been replaced with a set of 'those two guys' that like to show up in some 70% of movies across the grid. Bonus points that they're of body types that counter one another (a.k.a. skinny and fat). In place of the Rancor and the Sarlacc pit, we have the  Kraken.
For Darth Vader we have Dave Jones, two men torment by women and/or their deaths...into evil...for some reason. And the big bad Palpatine regrew his hair and held on to vague accent as Edward Norington, both revealed to be in control of the villain from movie two on. Lando Calrizian is Swann's old fiance and helps our rebels with their cause. Admiral Akbar is now a blind lady pirate.
On the note of animals, while I appreciated the bird motif Jack Sparrow, Elizabeth Swann, Will Turner (a type of pigeon no gave any fucks for) I noticed that no one was a Falcon so as not to shine direct light on the paper thin veil.
Or to place the whole plot in bullet points
  • Darth Davey Jones Vaders falls for a woman who for vague reasons cause him to go insane and turn to a robotic James Earl Jones or Chthulu's cousin.

true angst involves hideous transformation
  • Swannlakelea action girl and Willy Skywalker meet by fate
  • Willy Skywalker gets a call to action and begins on a quest
  • We meet a jolly band o' misfits and rebels
  • Jack Solo proves he's a bad ass
  • Trip to Cloudy Tortuga City, shit's all crazy
  • Willy Skywalker finds the disturbing truth about his father Bootstrap Vader
  • Narrative takes us to a swamp place to get advice/training from Callipsyoda, bonus points that both journeys seem to only take a few hours
  • Jack Solo gets stuck in the narrative limbo of frozen Krakonite
  • The Dark British Empire shows its anger at the rebel pirates
  • Will Skywalker with a jolly band o' misfits saves Jack Solo from frozen Krakonite
  • someone vaguely evil mourns a giant dead killing machine beast
  • We get to meet the rebel leaders with a fish man and blind Chinese woman
  • Palpatinbeckett does some evil shit
  • Darth Jones and Palpatinbeckett are killed by the band o' rebels
  • Hero gets the girl
  • After sort taking down the Dark India Trading Empire, we cheer
  • I stop purchasing DVDs and return to illegal downloading like a sane person
The only significant difference is each movie's love triangles. Swannkinght is not Orlando Turner's brother and their relationship can continue incest free. Woot.
What's really eerie is that in the first of the Pirates movies Swannknight pretends to be Bootstrap's spawn (making her Will's sister) giving Gore a good shot for a parentage reveal that I suppose he chose against for fearing of seeming a little too familiar.
Your choice of characters and messages. Pirates or Space Pirates, Imperialism is evil or....Imperialism is evil. In any event, both good flicks when drunk.
